Post #3: Close Analysis of Text

Objective

Close analysis of Shakespearean language.

Task

"Sigh No More" is the song that Balthasar sings to Don Pedro, Leonato and Claudio as they set the trap for Benedick (Act II, Sc.III, p.26)

Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more;
    Men were deceivers ever;
One foot in sea and one on shore,
    To one thing constant never;
        Then sigh not so,
        But let them go,
    And be you blithe and bonny;
Converting all your sounds of woe
    Into. Hey nonny, nonny.

Sing no more ditties, sing no mo,
    Or dumps so dull and heavy;
The fraud of men was ever so,
    Since summer first was leavy.
        Then sigh not so,
        But let them go,
    And be you blithe and bonny,
Converting all your sounds of woe
    Into Hey, nonny, nonny.

Your job is to paraphrase the song, then answer the following questions in TWO to THREE paragraphs.

  • What does the song say about the nature of men?
  • What does the song recommend women do in response?
  • Explain whether or not you agree with what the song claims.
  • How does the song reflect the action of the play?
  • Why do you think Don Pedro and his co-conspirators choose to use this song when they do?

Be sure to include an IMAGE that you feels captures the meaning of the song!
